Today I just downloaded the Microsoft Windows 7 Beta (2.44GB) which BT at around 1.30MB/s. I tested it under VMWare 5 Workstation Virtual Computer running with 2 CPU (AMD X2 4200), 1 GB RAM and 16GB HDD. The installtion quite fast, it just like installing XP. After the first boot up, I can’t believe that similar functionality like the stupid Vista BUT the performance is far more better. Please note that this is running in virtual enviroment and ment to be a bit slower than running on real machine. The interface is far impress than the Vista. I bet this time MS doing a real good job, when the full version come up, I definitely will replace my XP with it. The most important part is I can’t wait to test my ATI X4850 with DirectX 10!!!

Good job, MS!!!

This morning, I found my iPhone 3G (firmware 2.0.1) looks like something wrong, all the music on it seems missing. I have been trying to re-sync it for so many times, it seems the files are there but just not showing on the iPod on iPhone.

Finally in the afternoon I saw there is a firmware 2.0.2 for update, so I try to update it but the problem stay the same, no music at all.

Then I start to do the restore, I thought the backup is working all right so I didn’t go and backup my photos (which actually the backup process will not back it up anyway, I have to use Picasa to copy the photos but I forgot to do it), the restore seems going all right.

The next thing my nightmare came, the backup set actually not working (which is only for 2.0.1) and now I lost all my SMS and Photos (contacts, calendar and email is all right because real copy are in my Outlook).

Damn it stupid Apple, what kind of backup and restore you are doing…you make me feel so unhappy

Just download and install the Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. After I restart my PC and first run it, everything seems all right. When I started to make a blog post in here (wordpress standalone), the IE8 Beta 1 just CRASH!!! and for 3 times it said CONFLICT with the Google Toolbar I have when using the IE6, lol, why they want to push Google away???

Ok, so I remove the Google Toolbar for IE, then try to write new post in blog here again, this time just run OK BUT all the CSS and layout went wrong. Hmmm, when I download this IE8 Beta 1, it stated for professional and web developers, but seems like they still want to keep their own CSS and layout with not compatible to other browsers in the market (at least Firefox, Safari and Opera always quite similar in working with CSS and Layout)

A bit dissapointed with the new IE8 Beta 1. Oh ya, I don’t like Vista, so I never use the IE7, now I know my decision is correct, stay with IE6 until the 7 and 8 both stable

Came across this piece of freeware for Mac OS, such a nice and smart application. With Fluid, you can specified the web app to become an app in Mac OS.

A more simple explanation is, you start this application, you then put in the URL (internet address / domain name) of the web app, for example http://www.gmail.com, and then you put in the name, let say, GMAIL. Then you choose where you want it to create the application, for example save it on the DESKTOP (the OS desktop folder) and you choose the ICON file in PNG/GIF/JPG or ask to use the FAVICON of the site and click OK. Within seconds, a new application will be created and you just run the GMAIL like an application in the Mac.

The advantages to create web app in this way are

1) You make the daily use web app/web site to be open easily, no need to type the same address everytime you use your Safari/Firefox

2) You can have different apps running the same time with different credential, for example I am using GMAIL and Google Adsense in different account but now I can open them at the same time by creating them as applications using Fluid

Oh yes, you may say I can do this by just clicking on the bookmark and just using different browser, but I can see that when web apps getting more popular, then Fluid definitely will be a smart way to keep yourself organized, especially for me lol

check it out yourself at http://fluidapp.com/

I just been thiking of the Apple Mac Mini can be a good 1U server. When I search for this information on the internet, I found out that there are already a hosting company in Cambridge provide this service. Interesting huh.

Why using Mac Mini as 1U server? There are a few reasons

1) Pricing wise it will be cheaper than the standard 1U server
2) Half of the size or maybe just 1/4 size of a standard 1U server, which means I can host more server in a 1U rack
3) Performance wise is competetive which the Mac Mini running on Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83
4) The power consumption also less, which is quite GREEN
5) The downside maybe the MEMORY not in ECC mode, but do I really need this now a day?
6) The other downside will be the HDD (Harddisk) which can be quite limited especiallly if I want to make an internal RAID 1 seems will be a problem. But I can overcome this by putting in an external USB HDD or backup to another NAS server (possibly a Mac Mini NAS) (NAS = Network Attached Storage)

I am currently experimenting the enviroment by using my Macbook. Apache 2 and PHP 5.0 already comes with the Mac OSX Leopard, so I just need to enable them. Now just finish installing the MySQL 5.0.5 64 bit into my Macbook and going for test run.

As for Control Panel, Webmin will be a good choice tooo since it’s open source and easy to setup, maintain and for use.

I will put on more progress here soon.

Today I just try to install the apploc.msi (MS AppLocale Utility) to support some chinese software on to my new Laptop running MS Vista Home Premium and found out that Vista did not permit me to do so. The message displaying you need Administrator right to install the software. I looged in as a administrator user but still cannot install it. Finally after searching through the MSDN documents, I found the solution.

Click on Start and then at the Search Box (for Run as well), type in

msiexec /ju c:\apploc.msi

which msiexec is the utility to run MSI Package file

and /ju means

j stand for advertise and permit to
u stand for current user

and interesting, I found the Applocale successfully added to my Programs Menu.

Hope you can get it through!!! Feel free to email me or drop a message in the forum
